How Vitamins and Minerals Work

How Vitamins and Minerals Work

It is no wonder that as many as 90% of people who open a bottle of nutritional supplements will look for something in particular in order to meet their nutritional needs. Many of us take dietary supplements not only to compensate for what we are lacking, but also as a hope to provide ourselves with an extra boost; a healthy preventive buffer to prevent disease and keep us healthy for a long time to come.

Dietary supplements can be found in many forms, from pills to powders, and from drinks to bars. Most people think of supplements as containing vitamins or minerals, however there are more complex and multi-faceted forms available. The primary types of nutritional supplements contain vitamins, minerals, herbal extracts, amino acids, fatty acids, and plant derivatives.

Supplements are classified according to the amount of nutrient provided to us. If you were to take one pill containing the same amount of vitamin E as your breakfast, you are taking one form of a vitamin. However, if you were to take a multivitamin supplement, then you would be taking two types. There are also vitamins that we absorb directly into our body and those that we have to work harder to convert into usable energy.

One important type of supplement is the protein supplement. Protein can not only help increase the amount of calories we eat, it can help control our appetite and prevent weight gain. Protein has many important functions that cannot be overstated.

Amino Acids are the building blocks of proteins. When the body is in need of proteins, it makes amino acids in order to help make new proteins and keep itself in working order. Amino acids are found in many forms, including supplements that come in capsules and powder form.

Fatty Acids is essential in making certain types of hormones. Fatty acids are also used by the body to break down food and keep it from getting too far too much fat. In addition to their role as a building block for proteins, fatty acids are important in making neurotransmitters and hormones.

Vitamins and Minerals are also important in keeping the body in good health. Minerals, such as calcium, are needed to keep the bones strong while vitamins A, C, and E can help maintain good health through normal skin health.

Supplements nowadays are readily available from most health food stores, so finding them shouldn’t be too difficult. Take the time to find the right kind of supplement to meet your needs.

Protein supplements are the most common types available and can include powdered or liquid forms. The protein is usually made from eggs, milk, whey, casein, soy or even beef.

Magnesium is needed to make nerve cells work properly and in order to regulate blood pressure. This is also used by the liver to help metabolize fatty acids. Magnesium is also an important nutrient that helps regulate the absorption of other nutrients.

Fish oil is also another popular form of supplement. It helps lower cholesterol and helps people suffering from arthritis. Vitamin D is also available in the form of Vitamin D supplements, which can help protect against bone loss and some types of cancer.

Vitamins and Minerals can also be in capsule or powder forms. Some forms may require that they be mixed with oils or other liquids for better absorption. Other forms such as green tea are added to the supplement for additional antioxidant benefits.

A combination of all these vitamins and minerals is a great way to get the nutrients you need but in a convenient manner. The only problem with all of these supplements is that there may not be enough of some of the elements in every pill. Some are better than others and some don’t provide enough.
