Steroid Side Effects
What is the difference between steroids and muscle growth hormones? A hormone is simply a biological chemical substance with four simple rings arranged in an orderly fashion. Hormones have two main biological functions: as key constituents of cell membranes that change membrane fluidity to facilitate passage of hormones through cell walls; and as signaling chemicals by which hormones exert their effects on other cells and tissues. The term “steroid” came into common use from the German chemist Helmuth von Mises, who first studied hormone action in 1908.
Steroid receptors are protein-protein complexes, or receptor domains, located on the surface of cells. Steroid receptors are usually surrounded by a membrane and bind different proteins and other substances. Steroid receptors are found all over the body and bind different hormones including estrogen, testosterone and cortisol. When steroids enter the body, the steroid receptors bind these hormones to form long chains of amino acids called steroids. This process is called receptor binding and results in the production of the steroid hormone.
As mentioned above, there are two major types of steroids: estrogens and testosterone. Estrogens are naturally produced in the body. When these are introduced into the body, they bind with the steroid receptors and cause them to produce more of the estrogen receptor complex. Testosterone is synthesized when testosterone receptors bind the testosterone hormone.
Some drugs, such as tamoxifen, which is commonly used to treat breast cancer, inhibit the formation of these hormones. These drugs are not meant to be used in isolation. Instead, they must be combined with other drugs that mimic or are intended to mimic the function of the estrogen and testosterone hormones, respectively.
Steroid use is often associated with athletes and bodybuilders because they need to increase the amount of hormones they produce. In the gym, these steroids can be injected into muscle cells and then released into the bloodstream. They are injected into muscles after an intense weightlifting or bodybuilding session to increase the amount of testosterone in the body. For example, if a bodybuilder wants to bulk up, the first thing he does is build more muscle mass in the muscles than he has to and injects steroids into those muscles to increase their size.
Bodybuilders do not only use steroids for this purpose. Many bodybuilders will also use steroids to recover from physical and psychological stress. While the muscles can rebuild and grow after physical and psychological stress, steroids help the body rebuild the lost tissue after stress has taken its toll. Also, steroids provide a temporary source of energy by binding muscle tissue to the bone.
Steroid use in bodybuilding is not limited to athletes and bodybuilders. Many people choose to use steroids to improve their appearance, to treat serious conditions such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure, depression, multiple sclerosis, kidney disease, ulcers, diabetes and many other medical conditions.
There are no known side effects of taking steroids. However, some side effects of steroids include weight gain, liver damage, increased cholesterol levels, irregular heartbeats, increased fat and appetite levels, and reduced sexual drive. Because steroids bind to the estrogen and testosterone receptors, some women might experience uterine contractions.
Other side effects of steroid abusers are at increased risk of infection, kidney failure, high blood pressure and heart attack. Women who abuse steroids are also at an increased risk of developing breast cancer.
Unfortunately, doctors, nurses, health care professionals, and teachers have been prescribed steroids to improve their sexual performance for decades. Doctors prescribe them for a variety of conditions, including male impotency, to treat fibromyalgia and chronic pain, to boost libido, and to prevent fatigue and depression. Although physicians do not recommend taking steroids to cure cancer, they prescribe them for patients who suffer from cancer. and even patients who are trying to treat malignancies.
As with any medication, there are many benefits and risks when using medical treatment. Although there are no documented health risks associated with steroids, patients should consult their doctor before starting a program of steroids or any other medication. Although steroids are highly effective in relieving pain, patients should consult their doctor about the possible side effects of these medications.
As stated above, the risks of steroid use, especially when combined with other medications, is that they can cause damage to the liver, kidney and bones, which may increase the risk of infections and kidney failure. If a patient has high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, cancer, depression or other serious illnesses, steroids should be used under the supervision of a physician and only with the advice and approval of a doctor.
